Hal returns the talisman to Osgood and reminds his men that neither they or their troops are to eat with the others that night. (His excuse is that he wants them to remain completely apart from everyone until after the competition, but its really because hes going to poison the other troops food supply.)N28AprilSee, smeKiernan is lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, heart beating like a hammer, anger rising and falling like waves in his heart. (Jaw healed?) He is anxious about tomorrow and cannot sleep, but his body remains perfectly controlled. There is an anxious knock at his door. He pops out of bed and answers the door. Its one of his men. Action Guard Kiernan your men are deathly ill. Haft Guard (insert name here) sent me to get you. Hes says its an emergency. Kiernan feels the heat of his anger move toward the chill of fear. Have you called a fisicien? The man shakes his head. Ill go now. Run, boy! Be quick about it!29AprilSee, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dryHal and his troops gather on the field and meet Kiernan and his troops. Kiernan looks weary, black circles under his eyes. Hal looks well rested and relaxed, and that just pisses Kiernan off that much more. Hals troops, on the other hand, are sort of a mishmash of terrified looking rabble, though this doesnt appear to cause Hal an ounce of concern. Kiernans troops look organized but weary. Hal walks to Kiernan and extends his hand (or whatever the greeting is) but Kiernan just stares at him with murder in his eyes. Hal stands on an old tree stump and reads a letter from Veritane addressing the troops and expressing his regret that he could not be present for the exchange. Hal then addresses all of the troops, speaking encouragement, chivalry and fun. He asks Kiernan if hed like to say something and the man nods. He stands on the stump and says that this is no game that the welfare of the men hangs in the balance, ruled by a warrior or a farmer. Logger. Whatever. He encourages Hals men to put very little into the competition. Then he announces that he has chosen the other side of the field as his flag. Hal protests loudly. What?! Weve had this decided for more than a week! You cant change it at the last minute! Kiernan pulls out the agreement and reads it aloud, a smug look on his face its his right to choose which side of the field he will fight from and the wording does say that he can choose which side of the field is his, and is said in such a way that it really does say he can choose it whenever he wants, even at the battles beginning. Hals own words appear to have come back on him, and hes obviously shaken. Kiernan leans down and says, My spies have seen you sneaking out every night, and though you were good at losing them, Im betting you were rigging the field. Hal whispers back, If you can change the sides, I can change the field. And queue everyone into the fact that you are a dishonorable crapsplatter who sabotages the field because hes not capable of winning the combat on his own merits? Do it. I shall inform them all of why, though I doubt it will be necessary. Soil your name and reputation before youve been in your position for a month. He leans closer, his eyes squinted, I cursing dare you, rat. Hals teeth are clenched, his eyes bugged wide. He spins to face his troops. You heard the man. Were taking the other side of the field. Move out! Smiling Kiernan says, Not for all the good it will do you when I have slain you after the battle.29AprilHal murders KiernanSee, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidityLate in the battle (just before the second time Hals side gets the flag) on the field. Osgood has directly disregarded the orders hes given because all of Hals commands take the troops into difficult territory they use the field poorly, putting them at a distinct disadvantage. He commands his Haft Guards to go someplace that is (unbeknownst to him) trapped, and in the process one of his Scraps stumbles across Kiernan and Haft Guard/Action Guard Tossel. They overhear them talking about how the poison failed, and Kiernan is furious with him. (The kid really likes Hal, though, and seeing Hal in action, he decides to really join him. Kiernan kills the kid on the field of battle, thinking to make it look like an accident, but it doesnt work. Hes seen doing it. A high speed chase where Hal catches him and kills him? This is why Hal winds up with Dray as one of his Action Guards.) The Pommel Guard (in charge of the Scrap) sends one of the Gauntel Guards back to Osgood to report, and Osgood takes the Gauntel to Hal to report immediately. Hal hears about it and instantly has the soldier show him where this is taking place, helping him to dodge the traps. As they approach, the sound of battle is heard, and it sounds different than the other, playful bantering it sounds real. They come through the trees and see that Kiernans spy, Tossel, is on the ground in a gathering pool of blood. Kiernan is himself engaged in combat with the Pommel Guard (who is already injured and fighting for his life) while his Scrap is fighting Kiernans men. Hal calls for it to stop, reminds them all that he is the superior officer and that anyone who fails to listen to him will be executed. That works. They stop. Hal gives the order for Kiernan to be arrested, but Kiernan quickly reminds the troops that, unless the battle is won by Hal, Hal is no longer the commanding officer and that he will be. There is a stale-mate and everyone looks confused. The tension could be cut with a knife. Hal smiles. Men, its ok. I release you of your duty to arrest this man. Kiernan, let us not forget that, win or lose, we have a fight to the death ahead of us. Kiernan says (winded), I have been in battle. I am ill prepared for combat with a fresh opponent. Quaterouse Sentinel Hal says, Firstly, I couldnt care less. Id kill you if you were crippled. But be comforted I suffer still from the poison you set in my veins. I see no reason to draw this out any longer the men do not know who to listen to so let us provide them a clear leader. He draws his sword. Stay back men! Let the fight go where it will. Come, Kiernan, and let us do battle. Kiernan readies his sword. To the death! Hal nods. The ensuing fight is aggressive, but it doesnt go well for Hal who wasnt kidding about the ill effects of the poison. Hes pressed up against the edge of a shallow gully, and Kiernan presses in hard. Hal then deftly dodges, grabs Kiernans hand as the man lunges, and pulls him neatly off balance and down the gully he goes. Hal turns, a smile already on his face, as Kiernan falls on his face and slides down on his belly, cursing, to the bottom. Uninjured, he hops to his feet, and waits for Hal to descend. When Hal doesnt, he calls up, Get thee hither! Hal shakes his head. I think Ill wait for you, lad. Kiernan lifts one foot and brushes at his boot, shouting, Come down here! Men, look at him a coward! A crying coward! He lifts the other foot and brushes at that boot too, then flicks his hand as if trying to get something off. Youre no leader! Youre just a farmer Logger. Whatever. he stops to brush off his boot again, and then a dawning look runs over his face. He looks down, and suddenly turns to run around a corner in the gully. Hal chuckles and walks around a couple trees to the other side, where he is able to see down into the gully where the turn terminates in a hill of ants. Kiernan sees it, who is now slapping at his chest, his thighs, brushing madly. He begins cursing Hal violently, turning to run the other way. Hal quickly moves back around the U, grabbing a canteen of lemon juice from one of his subordinates and dousing his feet in it as he goes. He leaps down to land in front of Kiernan, who is now tossing his head, brushing at his skin, growling and howling. Hal swings his sword and lands a biting blow to Kiernans knee and the man goes down screaming, brushing madly at his face and neck. He takes another shot and lays open one hand, then again and lays open the other. Dodging kicking feet and flailing limbs, waits and aims and then thrusts into an armpit, causing that arm to go mostly limp. Kiernans movements are choppy now, the ants cover him head to foot, blood flows from his wounds. He screams, Just kill me! Gah! Help! Just kill me! Hal says, I already have, and steps back to watch. The ants wont touch him. Above him, all around the edge of the gully, the troops stand and watch in shock and horror as Kiernan bleeds to death, covered in ants. While the man is still writhing and screaming, the trumpet of victory is blown from Hals camp. Hal calls for a rope to be thrown down to him. He quickly sprays it and his hands liberally with lemon juice, and then hauls himself up out of the gully. He hears someone say, Mercy someone must help him if only by putting him out of his misery. Hal grabs the soldier. Anyone who injures that man has attacked an officer of the kings Battlery and will suffer the consequences of his actions. The soldier says, Then let me go get him out of there! Hal stands aside. As you wish. Descend into the ants, and perhaps you can ask them to treat you more kindly? Kiernan is screaming, and the soldier shakes his head, eyes frightened. They they didnt touch you. Hal smiles. 29AprilSee, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidity, affects nose, finge (Dont forget about the injured soldiers from earlier when Hal had to stop the fighting.) Hal gathers all of the troops to address them after the competition. He reports the death of Kiernan. He dismisses Leland and Horace on the spot. Horace tells Leland and Dray to come with him, but Dray doesnt move. Horace snaps, Dray! Lets go! Dray stands at attention. Dray! Dray says, He didnt dismiss me. Everyone is watching. The deal was if Kiernan and us lost, we would leave. We gotta go man. Im sorry, but dont make an ass of yourself. Everyones watching. Lets go. Dray looks fearfully to the side. Hal says, Osgood, Kyle, escort Horace and Leland to their quarters immediately, watch them pack, verify that they take nothing that is Battlery property, and then throw their sorry asses out of the barracks. Garrety, please escort my band back to the barracks for a night of raucous celebration. Theres a big cheer. Dray, take your men, Tossels, Horaces, Lelands and Kiernans troops back to the barracks and then meet me in my quarters to discuss your future with the kings Battlery. Dray shouts, SIR! YES SIR! See, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidity, affects nose, fingers, lungs, skin Hal asks for a report on the battle. Dray points out how much trouble their side had, sort of wonders about how, even though they had the high ground, excellent cover, they just kept running across one difficulty after another. Stinging sap. Stench weed. Thorns. Gravel hillside. Poison vine. Fire ants. Comments on how easily Hals troops seemed to have it. Hal says nothing, but offers him a spot to replace Tossel. Drays elated.N29AprilSee, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidity, affects nose, fingers, lungs, skin time of year, Hal sneaks out and cleans up most of the proof left that he booby-trapped the field? Hal certainly does not clean up the proof, rather is happy to leave it there as a warning to any inquisitive minds that want to know that he is NOT a man to be messed with. If you care to, have someone go and look at the mess, talk with Hal about it and learn to fear the man.30AprilSee, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, hHorace and Leland ride to Goargolen and reports Hals behavior to Pricomm Briney. Briney, at first very angrily, tells them theyre breaking the chain of command to come to him directly, and that they need to speak with Veritane. (Very angry it is a taboo that isnt broached to go over an officers head, and it is an unwritten absolute that to do so is to virtually guarantee that you will be ousted from the battlery, and in some cases, murdered in your sleep. Very little in soldiery life is as offensive, other than to perhaps punch another soldier in the face) Horace quickly explains that they are here as civilians because theyve been kicked out, and theyre not here to complain, but to inform Briney of matters they would want to know if they were in his position. He discusses the favoritism that Veritane has shown Hal, nothing more than a farmer. Leland says, Logger. Whatever. He paints just as ugly of a picture as he can summon. (Perhaps they are reenlisted for future plotline? At the same time, not very likely because, no matter how much Briney may appreciate the info, it doesnt change the fact that they DID go over Veritanes head. )AprilSee, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidity, affects nose,Reasigning all of Tossels, Lelands and Horaces men (Hal doesnt trust them enough for their fat asses to be of any use to him) to the service of the Quinouse Sentinel who will now be promoted to Quaterouse Sentinel to take over Pyle Outpost and his position to be replaced by a newly promoted soldier once he leaves for Heaton. (This has potential future plotline, when soldiers on the field of battle fight forGives each of Kiernans men individually the choice of staying or going (half of them stay, that is 2 Coveys of 13 men each) Attaches 1 ofGarrety keeps his 3 (not as experienced, not given as large a command)Praxedis meets LillyLilly taken home by Praxs father, her mother is killed, Lilly taken to a healerLilly taken in by Praxs familyJulyHal finishes training his troops (end three months)See, smell, noises, co (Painted, horns) (All the kids have moved back in with their mother now and live with Kezhenie who thinks of them nearly as family. Shes been learning Kaerick and the kids, especially Mya, have been learning Zhandugheen .) Intro this scene with Life was beginning to normalize for Adrianna and her children. Mya had been semi-accepted into Zhandugheen society along with some of the other little ones. KezhenMya and Kezhenie are working together, singing a beautiful duet that is a mix of Zhandugheen and human song. They are weaving baskets? cleaning? harvesting? and Myas song makes it easier for her while Kezhenies harmony helps her none at all but what does seem to happen is that Myas work goes easier still with a fellow singer beside her. They finish the song and Kezhenie pours praise out on Mya who laughs joyously and demurely. Then a messenger comes up and tells Kezhenie theres going to be a meeting with the Trinzholan faction the rumor is they want to try and make peace! Kezhenie drops what shes doing, excuses herself, and hurries to the meeting. The Trinzholan faction is there to meet with OoluMzh and Tathik regarding a proposition that the factions make peace with the humans. They know (Feelgway speaking for the Trinzholan) that they must convince the Binzhmai faction, who adopted most of the men from the Zhvenga faction (the faction whos women were all killed by the humans) to make peace, because they are the most likely to keep violence going. Kezhenie hopes to be able to speak in support of the Trinzholan, and while on the way there, runs into a conversation about how the humans aught to be killed. Shes frustrated and bursts in on the conversation, angry, arguing in favor of the humans using much of the same arguments Tathik had used. Destroying Heaton was necessary to send a message, killing these innocents would be vengeance only and that would be treasonous to love (or whatever). Shes basically reviled by them, her logic meaningless.Trinzholan faction comes up with a hope for peace.See, smell, noises, cold o (Painted, horns) Feelgway of the Trinzholan faction (refused to fight the humans) is coming to meet with the Binzhmai faction. They have come up with a solution, a hope of peace, believing that the humans will retaliate sooner or later and in force. They believe they have found, using strucity, a human in power who wants peace the queen, but they are unable to understand all that she is saying, only a general feeling of fear and an unwillingness to invade.
