Briney, at first very angrily, tells them they’re breaking the chain of command to come to him directly, and that they need to speak with Veritane. (Very angry – it is a taboo that isn’t broached to go over an officer’s head, and it is an unwritten absolute that to do so is to virtually guarantee that you will be ousted from the battlery, and in some cases, murdered in your sleep. Very little in soldiery life is as offensive, other than to perhaps punch another soldier in the face…) Horace quickly explains that they are here as civilians – because they’ve been kicked out, and they’re not here to complain, but to inform Briney of matters they would want to know if they were in his position. He discusses the favoritism that Veritane has shown Hal, nothing more than a farmer. Leland says, “Logger.” “Whatever.” He paints just as ugly of a picture as he can summon. They are weaving baskets? cleaning? harvesting? and Mya’s song makes it easier for her while Kezhenie’s harmony helps her none at all – but what does seem to happen is that Mya’s work goes easier still with a fellow singer beside her. They finish the song and Kezhenie pours praise out on Mya who laughs joyously and demurely. Then a messenger comes up and tells Kezhenie there’s going to be a meeting with the Trinzholan faction – the rumor is they want to try and make peace! Kezhenie drops what she’s doing, excuses herself, and hurries to the meeting. The Trinzholan faction is there to meet with Ooluōzh and Tathik regarding a proposition that the factions make peace with the humans. They know (Feelgway speaking for the Trinzholan) that they must convince the Binzhmai faction, who adopted most of the men from the Zhvenga faction (the faction who’s women were all killed by the humans) to make peace, because they are the most likely to keep violence going. Kezhenie hopes to be able to speak in support of the Trinzholan, and while on the way there, runs into a conversation about how the humans aught to be killed. She’s frustrated and bursts in on the conversation, angry, arguing in favor of the humans using much of the same arguments Tathik had used. Destroying Heaton was necessary to send a message, killing these innocents would be vengeance only and that would be treasonous to love (or whatever). They have come up with a solution, a hope of peace, believing that the humans will retaliate sooner or later and in force. They believe they have found, using strucity, a human in power who wants peace – the queen, but they are unable to understand all that she is saying, only a general feeling of fear and an unwillingness to invade. (Something about being Antuvliaen allows them foggy access to her.) They need to speak with Adrianna or her kids because they don’t understand the language of the queen spoken in their vision, and need an interpreter. Mya is chosen because she is the one who is virtually fluent in Zhandugheen now after months of captivity and as the go-between for the humans and the Zhandugheen – Adrianna has learned next tSee, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidity, affects (Painted, horns) Mya translates what they are able to relay of their remote viewing. Firstly, it is not the queen who has power, but her husband, the king. Secondly, they see that she warns the king of an impending invasion of dragons. Many of the Zhandugheen present, led by Ooluōzh and Gezhma, do not believe Mya, saying that she is a human, and that they can expect an invasion force based on the very fact that she says the queen wants peace. Others who know Mya believe her completely, led by Kezhenie and Tathik. Feelgway of the Trinzholan, however, who are heaven bent on finding a way of peace, take her at her word. They will send a messenger to the king to negotiate peace, and present him an offering of the delegation sent to him to work for him and serve him – a sort of servant ambassador. They ask for permission to send Mya along to translate, but Gezhma convinces Ooluōzh not to (she’d be a spy). They will also lend their hand in developing land near the wilds, etc. Tathik is convinced, but Ooluōzh isn’t. Gezhma is furious at the idea, and is supported by the men from the Zhvenga faction ferociously. He speaks instead of wanting to make a general rule – all humans die on sight. He stops back behind the last major hill before arriving at the ruins of Heaton (about a mile from Heaton and 4-5 miles from the forest edge) and sends Osgood (who has a strucity talisman called the Owl Talisman for seeing in darkness) with his scouts to find a good place for 200 men to camp, out of sight of the forest. Hal sets up camp on the western outskirts of Heaton, with Heaton between them and the forest (providing solid visual cover). Slips in at night, no fires at all, must be kept hidden. Hal, with Osgood and Kyle, 9 coveys, 27 scraps, a total of 117 men, leads a stealthy raid into the forest with dogs (or whatever – from the beginning of the book) at the crack of dawn, catches the Trinzholan faction (refused to take part in the destruction of Heaton) utterly unprepared, and wipes them out. Takes no prisoners. Is able to kill half of them before the alarm is out, and the rest are killed within minutes. Make this very tragic – this faction wanted nothing but peace, and thought it had found a way. They, in fact, refuse to fight back, but plead for their lives. The leader of the faction commands the others not to fight, to surrender though the humans slaughter them in a desperate attempt at getting the humans attention. Hal approaches him as he reaches out with the treaty in hand, saying the whole time, “Our offer stands! Our offer stands! Take me as your slave, we can have peace!” He is extending the treaty toward Hal, but Hal cuts his hand off, stomps on the treaty and then runs him through before cutting his head off. He hunkers down for the day, afraid that the killers may still be nearby. Waits for thick darkness and then runs to warn his faction, but stumbles across a human warrior. He freezes for a moment, then bolts for it. The soldier sounds the alarm and the order to pursue is given. Suddenly the forest comes alive with humans as they give chase at Hal’s command. Catch him before he can warn his faction – a reward to the soldier who catches him. (Slipping and falling running through the forest.) The Zhandugheen sprints through the trees in the darkness and, being better equipped, outdistances his pursuers, but Osgood tracks him quickly using his strucity talisman. They were moving to surround the Binzhmai tribe, but catching the Zhandugheen warrior has become the priority. Hal says he must be caught, and the chase is on, but when he realizes the Zhandugheen is going to get away, Hal has his whole Band turn from moving in on the Binzhmai and pursues the Glizhamai faction member. (The idea here is that if a faction is going to be alerted, at least the humans who are already ready for full scale combat will be able to catch the freshly alerted faction by semi-surprise – they won’t be able to be prepared. If all goes well, the faction they were heading for will still be unaware and they can raid them after.) The fight goes well, but it is not the overwhelming success they had the night before. The Glizhamai faction is warned and many of them are able to escape into the trees. Ooluōzh knows this means war. He immediately sends word to the Izhmanil faction who is not far off alerting them and asking that they gather into a single large camp. He moves immediately back into the trees (they don’t know the size of the human force) and up onto a hill to establish a more difficult to reach camp that is strategically placed – a bit awkward in that water isn’t as close by, however has an easy escape route backward into the forest and only one easy approach which can be heavily defended with minimal force. (The hill has a steep western slope that has no foliage to speak of. It’s eastern side is against a gorge that drops 20 or more feet to the river below with slick, moss covered rocks, has a bridge across it easily cut and watched at all times. It’s southern face is a cliff side of about 50 feet to some decently swift rapids below. It’s northern edge faces a wide clearing that is nothing but open terrain for nearly 300 feet, and then thin forest.) NOTE THAT THIS MOVEMENT MEANS TEARING DOWN THE TENTS OF KEZHENIE AND ULThere are thirty-two (33 if you count the now eradicated Trinzholan) other factions (30 send troops, see below, within a reasonable distance) known about from the combined knowledge pool of the Binzhmai, Zhvenga survivors, Glizhamai survivors and the Izhmanil, and scouts are sent to seek out each of them with a call to war. It is during this time that the Trinzholan remains are discovered. (This is going to go relatively well since each faction’s neighbors are generally related one to another.) Inside the forest, but near the edge, Prihouse Sentinel Hal establishes defenses, builds walls, etc. Uses Kyle, Osgood and Dray – Garrety (inexperienced) stays behind Heaton and works on creating a permanent camp along with an excellent defensive posture and a quick, easy to block get away path (this almost certainly comes into play later on in the novel when the Sandugan are overrunning Heaton camp and routing the soldiers back to the bridge). Hal’s forest fort is designed to have a false front manned by only a few watchmen (Approx. 56 men 3 have died so far – 14 scraps which is 1/3 of the men, 4 scraps from Kyle, 5 from Osgood, 5 from Dray) who are under order to retreat swiftly and flee the forest – as bait to draw the Zhandugheen forces deeper in. He has selected a spot in front of many large, pitted boulders for the walls to go up so that he can use the boulders to hide many men in. He also makes several covered foxholes, designed to be sprung so that as the Zhandugheen pass them, the humans can attack them from behind. He tells his men to be patient, that they only need to be hidden and silent for a few days, waiting for the attack, but that they are to be ready at every minute. He rotates the troops once every 8 hours, allowing each soldier to be out and about once a day. (Painted, horns) During this time, he is observed by the Zhandugheen scouts who report back to Ooluōzh that the humans are less than a hundred. (Garrety is back in Heaton camp and Hal is trying to keep only about 1/3 of the remaining force visible at any one time. Hal has figured on the Zhandugheen scouting him out and he wants them to underestimate the number of men he has. \nProcess Group PGID: 220036"
