Is met by eldest daughter Mya (very Native American features), sends her back to bed, and then goes out and finds a Zhandugheen youth, Zhakari, attempting to run with his butchered animal on its back. (Need to mention here the painted nature of the Zhandugheen , and their horns, foreign features.) He catches him, fights him, and is killed. See, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidity, affectsMorning 2/1/1 – Hal (very Native American features), an old retired Sekhouse Sentinel (lowest ranking non-combat officer, but worked his way up to it from a Gauntel Guard, lowest ranking soldier) who is now a logger is just arriving at the currently empty trading post (and night-time bar) on the outskirts of town. He begins bantering with the trading post keeper, Pete, about the latest wood haul coming in. They talk about how the village is growing, and that at this rate it will be a town soon enough. The price of wood is going up with demand, especially traders deliving to rural communities, and since this is a logging town, it’s sure to grow. Adrianna (very Native American features) and her children come in on their wagon. (Hal is an old friend of Adrianna) She begins sobbing even before she reaches Hal, asking where the guard is (of whom none are present) tells him the story. Once he explains that he found it wandering in the woods (a blatant lie) he is praised for bringing it in. (Bullnaizh is releived that he found an easy kill, because from time to time a Zhandugheen boy is killed while out hunting for his first kill.) Zhakari is questioned by the patriarch Ooluōzh, who is suspicious of the fact that the animal is obviously raised by humans, but the boy and his father say he found it wandering in the woods. It is enough though, and there is a celebration. A very subdued Zhakari is sent through the rite of manhood, branded by Bullnaizh who chalks his son’s subdued state up to the fact that he must be branded. As the feast is served, Bullnaizh brings his son before the tribe and brands him. He recalls talking with his very close old friend Veritane – more like a brother than a friend – and seeing a Zhandugheen arrow almost appear our of nowhere in his neck, the gurgling shout Veritane gave out, how he gripped the arrow and tore it from his throat as though somehow that would mean it hadn’t happened. The fight that ensued afterward as he commanded his complyment to take action, watching Veritane get run through and physically thrown off the cliff they were upon, a fighting retreat and finding to his horror that he’d gotten too far from his friend to go back. (Side note – may not belong here, but when he got back to his outpost after Veritane’s loss, he was promoted to Sekhouse Sentinel, partially because of his valiance in battle. It was tasteless to him, however, and he’d lost his love for the battlery because the refused to permit him to chase the enemy into the trees.) His anger builds until he is shaking, fists clenched, teeth gritted, and then he turns and with utter calm walks back into the buzzing tavern. Stands up on the counter and delivers his speech – let us destroy the Zhandugheen. There is a Tertaction Guard in the crowd who tries to disarm Hal, but Hal humiliates him. The man goes to his superior, the Quinouse Sentinel, (the highest ranking member of the soldiery in town) and brings him back along with a couple of Scraps to quell the uprising, but by the time he’s returned to the tavern, the mob is already born. Several men in the mob are soldiers. The town’s House Sentinel stands aside. A brief protest is raised by the Action Guard, but the House Sentinel asks him who he’d rather fight against at this point, the Sandugan or the mob. The soldier looks at the mob and shrugs. The House Sentinel gives permission for any of his men who want to go – off duty of course – the right to go if they want to, so long as they understand it’s their own necks on the line. The chorffles lead them to a Sandugan camp, (the Zhvenga faction) but it is the celebration of separation in which the male and female of the Zhandugheen factions split.Zoom in on two women talking about how bold the humans have become in cutting down the forest. (Also mention in here about hearing about how Wanuzhka, Weezhwoe's mother, was expected this morning, and they're annoyed that she hasn't come.) At first it was but a nuisance, but the land clearing is becoming more and more of a problem. “Why, just the other day they came and chopped down trees that I played under when I was a little girl. As if they had a right to cut down the trees in the first place! The audacity. And, of course, the further in they come and the more trees they cut down, we have to choose between being pushed back or pushing back. I know we’re peaceful, but there’s trouble brewing, I tell you. The woods be vast, aye, but just how far shall we permit this talzheet to go before we decide to do something about it?” “I know what you mean. I was just talking with Moke the other day and telling him, ‘We aught to put up some sticky and stink traps to deter them from coming any further in.’ He laughed at me, he did, but I could see that he was thinking about it. It’s no small matter that they’ve come this far already, and sometimes, from the edge of the woods, I think I can actually hear them – as if they’re moving closer to livin’ in the trees with us, or maybe they’re camp gets bigIt is the female camp they come across, partying loudly enough that they are taken completely by surprise. While they speak with him, they mentionOoluozh speaks with Tathik about whether Zhakari will be made mBack at Heaton, Miirlida (random citizen in attentance at the slaughter of the sandugan) arrives home exhausted. She had made it through the woods with everyone, but didn't kill any of the fiends as much from the fact that they were outnumbered 3 to 1 as the fact that she'd sorta lost steam by the time she got there. Still, she witnessed Hal's brutality, and is suffering from severe PTSD. When her husband asks her where she's been, she tells him the whole awful truth. (See text on next page, cut“He...” but her speech was overtaken by her sobbing. She shook violently with it, teeth gritted, breathing out loudly between clenched teeth as the image of that night's violence continually replayed over and over again in her mind. She is told there is nothing to be done, but that she probably doesn't have to worry about her daughter winding up bound to him, what with the scar and all. That thought puts Wanuzhka in a relatively good mood. Here she mentions that Faction Zhvenga has recently moved (not sure how she knows this?) and her daughterWeezhwoe is female member of Kezhenie and Zhakari’s faction, the Binzhmai faction. She is only 12 and not yet old enough to be traveling anywhere on her own, but her mother, Wanuzhka, has become ill, and it is customary to join your sibling's celebration of seperation – and since her mother is the sister of a woman in faction Zhvenga, she should be going – in fact, has promised her sister she would be there. However, since she's sick, she's unable to make the trip, and sends her daughter in her place. She is also related to a woman in the Zhvenga faction. Goes to join the celebration. It is not uncustomary for more than one faction to meet up and celebrate together. She finds the bodies, girls, mothers, daughters, grandmothers. She stumbles and runs for her life, cleverly though, not all hazardly shrieking. She returns to camp to inform Tathik, and there finds the zhanduma and zhandupoy in a conversation with Zhakari about whether or not they’re going to make him a man or not. (At this time, I have no idea how this conversation goes.) Informs Tathik and Ooluōzh, and the zhandupoy sends a warrior party to investigate. It takes no time to confirm what Weezhwoe said, the females of the neighboring faction are murdered, and there’s no question it was a large group of humans that did it (boot tracMattathias has been up all day with his wife – crying on and off, keeps remembering William. She finally falls into an exhausted sleep. goes to Hal (where does this take place? The lodge has been opened for business by one of the kids hired by Pete who got there and has no idea why Pete's not there. Nobody knowMatt, feeling very disapproving, and asks him if he can talk to him over to the side. Asks just what happened. Hal immediately gets the jive, and turns on the purest of indifference switches. Matt tells him how upset his wife is, he's angry, but Hal's response is to gently insult Lida by saying something like “Well Matt, not everyone's cut out for getting what has to be done, done.” Matt starts getting really angry and loud – maybe asks about dashing the children to death on the stones. The others can hear it (including Joresh), so Hal gets up to leave. Matt lays a hand on his shoulder, and Hal turns on him with fury in his eyes, but just takes gentle hold of his hand, and removes it from his shoulder. Tells Matt he's sorry his wife is so shaken, but that he should never, never touch Hal, unless he wants to wind up like Pete. (Hal thinks he's gently threatening him, but Matt knows that Pete is hanging to life by a thread.) See, smell, noises, cold or hot, rain or dry, humidity, affectsTrackers are sent to find the male half of the faction and inform them. In the meantime, the Binzhmai faction quickly moves their camp back a mile into the trees, further from the human camp, sends scouts to see if the humans may be sending more and sets up a guard and plans an escape path in the event the humans come for them too. The men of the Zhvenga faction that was deLida awoke and started to cry, but when Matt tries to comfort her, she shrugs him off and gets to cleaning house like a maniacJoresh shows up at Matt's. Apologizes for calling Matt a coward that first night when Hal was first talking to them all. Matt accepts, but asks for more details. Joresh relays the whole of the nights events, and the two of them ask each other what they're going to do about it all. Joresh feels like he's committed a crime, and is suffering from some serious guilt (wasn't really prepared for what went down). Matt says he needs to go to the guard, but obviously can't talk to the guard that went with Hal to the fight. Also doesn't want to speak with Quinouse Sentinel Igthis (the guy Hal spent the new year with) – they'll need to go to Trubataen and speak with the High Sentry at least (Igthis' boss), but they really want to go all the way to the Secomm – a man who is known to have been sorely injured in his youth. (This is Veritane they're talking about going to see.) They determine they will need more like-minded men and/or women to go with them, a delegation, because they're going to be up against Hal and the guard, and most likely Igthis will be on the side of Hal and Lamulaen, so they decide to talk to a numbeHazhakhan asks for revenge on Zhakari. Zhakari finds himself lifted up. This, of course, ends catastrophically when theNEED TO ADD ALL THIS – UPDATE NOTES. WILL ALSO NEED TO GO BACKThis be the explanation for how we get Kezheni's age within reach of Evan and still get to keep the fight in the circle between Gezhma and his primary male opponent. Moved it all to 'KezheKezheni – 13 ½ when story begins. Means she's born in toward end of Eremens (6th month). Means her whole saga is developed as the war goes on, not as you have it written. Which works out great, because you can still have a reasonable future marriageKezheni has an older friend (of sorts), Havayzha, (who thinks that Kezheni should be impressed with her because she's older). Kezheni is always kind Havayzha, who has a tendency to take advantage of Kezheni, though Kezheni doesn't really see it. Havayzha is a friend because of Kezheni's gift for healing and the fact that it is obvious that it has garnered favor from the Zhanduma – hoping to be moved up the food chain in favoritism with the Zhanduma by association. It hasn't worked, but it looks like it's worked, because everywhere Kezheni goes, Havayzha goes, and since Kezheni is often looked to and called upon by the Zhanduma, when Kezheni is seen with the Zhanduma, so often is Havayzha. And so, Gezhma is interested in her, because she's with the 'in' crowd, though she has little talent of her own. Kezheni, in the meantime, isn't even interested in being one of the 'in' crowd. (Her influence on Havayzha, though, is tangible,\nProcess Group PGID: 208940"
